When the weather gets colder, it might seem harder to get regular physical activity. Thankfully, there are many fun ways for you to stay active and healthy throughout the winter months. Try one or more of the following ideas this season.
Take Your Dog for Walks
Having a dog is a great reason to get outdoors and stay active in winter. Take your dog for daily walks, so you both get exercise. Just make sure you’re both warm enough during your walks.
Skip the Elevator
Instead of relying on the elevator to get to a higher floor, take the stairs. Walking up a flight of stairs gets your heart pumping and also gives you a way to get exercise while staying indoors.
Join a Group Class or Workout Studio
Working out with others offers an excellent way to stay motivated. Consider joining a group class or workout studio in your area, so you can get plenty of exercise without having to venture out into the cold.
Shovel Snowy Walkways and Driveways
If you get some snow this winter, head outdoors to shovel off your walkways and driveway. Shoveling snow is a good cardio workout, but be careful about how you do it. Don’t strain your back while lifting, and take breaks so you won’t overdo it.
Try Ice Skating
For some indoor or outdoor fun in winter, go to a local ice skating rink. Ice skating is a great form of exercise for your muscles and cardiovascular system.
Sign Up for Hot Yoga
If you prefer being active indoors during winter, consider signing up for a hot yoga class at a local studio. Hot yoga is a form of yoga that takes place in a very hot environment, so you can avoid the cold while exercising.
Enjoy Outdoor Winter Activities
If you like being outside when it’s cold, make the most of it with exciting winter activities. Go snowboarding or skiing for an adventurous workout. Go sledding for a family-friendly activity in the snow.
Clean the House
When it’s too cold or wet to go out, you can stay active inside by getting some housework done. Get a head start on spring cleaning by vacuuming each room, dusting, clearing away clutter and doing other household tasks that keep you on your feet.
Go for walks outside if it’s not too cold out. Walking is a good cardio exercise that gives your heart and lungs a good workout. You can also take your walks at a local mall.
Avoid High-Calorie Foods
One more way to stay fit in winter is to watch what you eat. Avoid heartier foods that are high in calories, and stick to healthy, nutritious foods. Stay tuned for our next blog to learn about some alternatives to your favorite comfort foods!
