The Importance of Hand Washing for Your Health

The Importance of Hand Washing for Your Health

Washing your hands is a simple task that has major benefits for your health. Keeping your hands clean by removing germs on a regular basis can significantly lower your risk of getting sick, especially when the flu, common cold, and other illnesses are going around. Find out more about the importance of hand washing for your physical well-being.

Illness Prevention

Why is it so important to wash your hands? Doing so can stop you from picking up germs and getting sick. When you touch your face, you’re making it easy for germs to get into your body and cause illness. Washing your hands helps eliminate these germs before this happens. Hand washing can also prevent you from spreading germs to other people if you have a virus or other illness.

Steps to Wash Your Hands Often

You should make it a point to wash your hands at the following times:

  • Before you eat
  • Before you prepare food
  • After you use the restroom or bathroom
  • After touching garbage
  • Before and after treating an injury
  • When caring for someone who is sick
  • After you blow your nose or cough
  • After touching animals
  • When you have visible dirt or grime on your hands

When you wash your hands, use the following steps to ensure that you’re doing it properly:

  • Get your hands wet with warm or cold water
  • Put soap on one cupped hand
  • Lather and rub the soap all over your hands for about 20 to 30 seconds, and make sure you clean all areas
  • Rinse all of the soap off of your hands
  • Dry your hands off using a fresh or clean towel
  • Shut off the faucet with the towel to avoid picking up germs

Don’t use antibacterial soap, since this type of soap doesn’t offer you more protection from germs. Instead, it increases the risk of having bacteria develop that are able to resist the antimicrobial ingredients in soaps.

Hand Washing Do’s and Don’ts

There are right and wrong ways to wash your hands, no matter how simple this task might seem. It’s important to make sure that you’re washing the right way so that you’ll benefit the most from this preventative health measure.

When washing your hands, you should do the following:

  • Use soap and water, which provide the most effective way to reduce germs
  • Use a hand sanitizer if you aren’t able to wash with soap and water

When you wash your hands, keep the following in mind:

  • Don’t use antibacterial soap, since this type of soap doesn’t offer you more protection from germs. Instead, it increases the risk of having bacteria develop that are able to resist the antimicrobial ingredients in soaps.
  • Don’t rush, or you won’t be eliminating germs much. Take your time washing your hands, and be sure that you clean every area.
